indices tumbled closing at session lows. the dow fell 139 points. shares of chesapeake energy helped drag down energy stocks. the natural gas producer reported a third quarter loss and said it is delaying scheduled asset sales. there was one bright spot though on the day for sure. that was starbucks. shares of the coffee giant soared 9%. it solid beat fiscal fourth quarter earnings estimates while raising the full-year profit outlook. look at that stock. >>> now to our top story. the dire gas shortage is a consequence of the super storm. drivers are waiting for hours upon hours to fill up tanks only to be turned away because the station's tanks run down while awaiting. cars are being abandoned in lines up to half a mile long because they can't get gas. there are reports of gas rationing siphoning and fights breaking out at stations. we even heard of one instance of someone pulling a gun because someone cut a gas line. things are falling apart in new york. everyone wants to know how long will it be before drivers have access to gas? joining me now, patrick dehaan, chief petroleum anal

is peabody energy. it was recommended to buy aggressively because of the chart. i have been and remain conservative. china is the growth market for peabody. big coal company. closed $29.28. it's been a remarkable run. the weirdest rally is tech. we have seen so many disappointments in tech, we forget how much of tech goes into china. huge market. so let's just say it was enough to reverse the trend of all of the stocks. they moved higher. it was as if they reported better not worse than expected earnings. china provided the change at the margin to make this rally happen. china, not the u.s., which everyone knows is okay, and europe is getting much worse. when you get numbers that break the fall of a huge economy like the one we got from china i i read about in the park this morning, it spells growth. that's what we got. in return, so many of the industrial and tech stocks that had looked like ugly ducklings turned into beautiful swans -- white ones at that. i don't expect them to revert to their hideous stature. the first in a long line of positive numbers. let's go to george. >

outlook for the rest of the year. america's biggest publicly traded energy company, exxon mobil, saw production fall to its lowest level in three years last quarter. still, earnings per share were stronger than anticipated, helped by profits doubling in its refining business. but production fell more than expected. the company explained part of the drop was due to moving drilling rigs from going after low price natural gas to higher margin oil. shares were up a fraction, rising a half a percent. volume was stronger than usual. the stock is up 20% in the past year. the biggest retailer was the biggest drag on the dow with the market trying to gauge sandy's impact on business at walmart. the stock fell 2.1%. 294 wal-mart facilities were closed at one point during hurricane sandy, thanks to mandatory evacuations, safety concerns, and power outages. after the close, the focus was on starbucks. consumers continue buying their coffee and lattes. earnings were 46 cents per share. that's a penny more than estimates. revenues and profit margins were up by double digits each. shares were up 1.
